DO YOU BELIEVE?

I am not asking about your belief or lack thereof in God.

Each person's theory of God is their own

and worthy of respect and freedom from prying questions.

No, I mean

"Do you believe you are meant to be a writer?"

Yes?

Then what are you doing about it?

Dreaming of climbing to the mountain top is fine.

But no mountain is going to reach down and lift you up to its top.

You have to force your way up the side of it, braving the cold, winds, and the weariness all on your own.

Not everyone makes their idea happen.

You've met those whose heart, head, and hands are congruent, aligned.

They turn talk into walk.

If we want to badly enough, we find a way.

We live the possibilities we love.

We don't have to remember we are on fire.

We just are on fire!

When you are committed to your dream,

people will sense it in you ...

Some of those will help you on your way...

for none of us makes it solely on our own.

There will be challenges.

But challenges are merely problems ...

and problems can be solved.

Every road block has a detour that can be taken.

It may not be the journey you envisioned,

but the destination can still be reached.

Impossible just gives birth to legends

WHAT ARE YOU DOING
TO MAKE YOUR DREAM
COME TRUE?

TOMORROW MAY BE THE START
OF YOU BECOMING LEGEND.

  1. Okay, Roland ... No, I was not meant to be a writer. I was however meant to be a mother, and when I couldn't carry my own biological children, I set about finding another way to be a mother. We adopted 2 brothers. My writing came to me by accident; I worked through the death of a loved one. I discovered that it came easily to me, and then I discovered that I preferred fiction-based writing. Free-verse suited me; short, crisp, and open to interpretation. In my mind, unless you're published, you're playing at writing. I'm regularly published by Ten Penny Players, Waterways, which supports learning for the children of parents in Rikers Island prison. It was when I was their featured writer that I was comfortable telling people, I am a writer. So, Roland, I wasn't meant to be a writer, but I am a writer.

  2. So, may I ask ... were you meant to be a novelist?

    1. When I was a child in Lafayette, Louisiana, my mother had to be hospitalized. My stepfather was off-shore working.

A wealthy woman across the street took me in for a time. She saw I liked comics and said she would write one on her typewriter if I dictated it to her.

I wrote a Green Lantern story as his power came from his will. You know children -- they have lots and lots of will. I was hooked.

I saw THE THIRD MAN on TV and wrote a short story born of that for a school assignment.

The teacher despised my spelling, and her slashing red pen almost killed my dream.

But I persisted. In junior high, I wrote a short humorous play and starred in it. The laughter from my own jokes inspired me.

I became a telephone operator to put myself through the university. I became a teacher, a counselor.

When my mother contracted cancer, I, with two friends, opened a ... you guessed it ... a book store ... so I could accompany Mother out of town for her treatments.

A conservative mother wouldn't let her hospitalized daughter read the just published Harry Potter novels ... but she trusted me to write adventures for her from our past conversations.

Thus were born the LUCIFER'S ORPHAN novels you see in my sidebar on this blog.

They are way down the books listed to the right -- below LET THE WIND BLOW THROUGH YOU and above my image of MAUKIE the cyber cat.

Not all Sleeping Beauties awaken, and I almost lost my copies of those books when the mother asked if her daughter could be buried holding the stories I wrote for her.

I later rewrote those stories from memory since the incident stayed with me.

Hearing of the little girl, some of my female customers asked me to write some Xena scripts to tide them over the season break.

When my mother died, so did the need for my book store, so I became a rare blood courier.

On my days off, I have been writing novels filled with fictional characters to keep me company.

So, I guess writing is in my blood. :-)

Boy, aren't you glad you asked?!

    2. Yes, I'm very glad that I asked, and I'm very glad that you answered. Thank you. Like you, I believe that everyone we encounter adds another layer to who we are.

  3. To me, people are jewels. And like gems have more than one facet so does a person. You have a facet marked Mother, another marked writer, another marked Poet, another marked Friend, another marked Nurturer.

I feel our friends shape us like diamond cutter tools as do our experiences. I believe we become many different people on our walk through life.

Whenever someone who knows you disappears, you lose one version of yourself. Yourself as you were seen, as you were judged to be.

Lover or enemy, mother or friend, those who know us construct us, and their several knowings slant the different facets of our characters like diamond-cutter's tools.

Each such loss is a step leading to the grave, where all versions blend and end.

    But that's just me. :-)

  4. Your post couldnt come at a better time for me. I've been struggling to get my book of short stories out for the last two to three years and have had to keep putting off the release I cant even count how many times. A day job as library technician for a law library that I have to take public transit to on the opposite side of my home town Sacramento four days a week makes it a real challenge. I like the library work and working with books, but I'm just not enthused over the subject that's too far over my head. (Isnt that ironic? Books, books everywhere and not a drop of inspiration. Or so it seems.)

I get Fridays off but half of that is taken up by all my household and financial chores. Plus I sleep in three to four hours for sleep missed during the week. And ADHD doesn't help
Well, it does in a certain respect, that's partly why I'm a writer. But it's still a challenge.

I cant afford to write full time, but I do try to find middle ground. I'll write no matter what because I really do believe I was born to do it. I'm almost enthused about nothing else.

    1. Thanks, Roland! Yes, it's good to have a daily writing goal of some sort which I try to do.
