HIDDEN SECRETS OF THE AMAZON KINDLE FIRE!

Sounds like another INDIANA JONES MOVIE, doesn't it?

Not quite ... though if Cate Blanchett wanted to show up next to me dressed as a slinky Nazi spy, I wouldn't complain ...

but she might ... to her agent

There are some myths floating around about the AMAZON KINDLE FIRE

that I thought I might shed the light of truth on.

I've read several reviews that seemed a bit unfair ...

1.) One review claimed the battery life was poor without even testing it (most reviews found the battery life was actually better than Amazon quotes.

2.) One review claimed it didn’t have a light sensor for automatic brightness.

That last point might look correct, but a quick inspection of the Fire turns up a light sensor at the upper-left hand corner of the screen.

However, it seems the latest version of the Kindle software does not allow for automatic brightness,

but a demo unit at Best Buy had automatic brightness enabled. So I’m assuming this is a feature that will simply be turned on in a later software upgrade.

3.) One review stated : "What isn't so impressive is the 169 ppi pixel density."

Say again?

The larger iPad has lower pixel density at 132 ppi. The Kindle Fire pixel density is identical to what's on the 7" Nook Tablet,

Both of which have this somewhat heavier density on a smaller device than the iPad, which is a good thing :-)

4.) The same review went on : "...a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP chip, but here paired with only 512MB of RAM. Perhaps it's the step down from the standard 1GB ..."

Really? Alice Wentworth is starting to growl. Reality check time :

The iPad has only 512MB of RAM also!

A lot of the Kindle Fire’s speed depends on your wireless network, because so much of the backbone of the Fire is on Amazon’s servers.

Now to the fun stuff :

1.) Screen – The screen on the Kindle Fire is really one of the highlights of the device. It’s crystal clear, has good viewing angles, and amazing colors.

It is prone to smudges though, so I would recommend getting some screen protectors if that type of thing really bothers you.

2.) The biggest issue solved by the Kindle Fire is that you no longer have to a book light or leave a light on when you're reading at night.

Coupled this with the fact that I find it easier to hold the Kindle Fire rather than the iPad 2 I borrowed from a friend when I’m reading laying down or propped up on pillows, this is a big win. The bright, backlit screen alleviates the need for a light.

3.) The fact that you can easily check email and do some other Tablet like functionality on this device is a real plus.

It’s not that you would expect to use this as a Tablet. You don’t. But you will like the option available to do other things if they become necessary.

All in all, the Kindle Fire is FUN. It is a gorgeous 7-inch, 16-million color display beaming a custom Amazonian Android build, made specifically for Kindle's essence.

From the minute you turn it on, the device is puzzlingly simple.

You don't have to think about how to use the Fire...

Reading, watching, browsing, and listening on the Fire are all tremendous, easy fun. Books, even very long ones, spring open quickly; page turning is, most of the time, very responsive.

KINDLE FIRE SHIPS EARLY BUT WILL YOU GET YOURS?

Amazon.com began shipping its Kindle Fire on Monday,

a day earlier than it expected

and extending its lead time over Barnes & Noble's rival Nook tablet.

Barnes & Noble's $249 Nook tablet hits shelves later this week

and, like the Fire, is expected to be a hot item over the holiday season.

Amazon may sell 3 million to 5 million Fire tablets this quarter.

But will all those pre-orders eat up Amazon's supply?

also announced that its new Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G will ship tomorrow, six days earlier than previously expected.

No word yet on whether the Kindle Fire will also be available in retail locations like Best Buy today.

Most stores should have stock of the tablets on site by now,

but Best Buy's Web site still lists the Fire as "Coming Soon" and unavailable for in-store pickup.

5 reasons :

1. Eye-popping affordability.

At $199, the Kindle Fire sells for less than half the price of the iPad, which starts at $500. So for every entry-level iPad bought and sold, you could buy two and a half Fires. That alone is turning heads, especially since the previously released and uninspired iPad clones have tried to charge as much as Apple for a much less desired product.

2. A lot more content. Content is king. And iPad may be king of the apps, but Kindle Fire bests it considerably by volume of content. The Fire will have immediate access to the 18 million movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, and books already available on Amazon’s easy-to-browse virtual shelves.

Apple doesn't cite how many TV shows or songs are available, but the number appears to be far less in anecdotal searches.

Want to rent instead of buy? There’s an app ... er, a solution for that, too: 10,000 movies and TV shows can be streamed instantly. Those numbers are huge, and growing every day.

3. Free storage. If you want to take all your content with you, the entry-level iPad and its puny 16 gig storage drive leaves a lot to be desired. You can buy more, but it’ll cost you. Which is why the Fire’s sales pitch -- free cloud storage for all your Amazon content -- is so enticing, especially since Amazon is already the no. 1 digital bookstore, the no. 2 mp3 store (behind Apple), and high on the list in other categories.

For content you don't buy from Amazon, there are about 6 gigs of free space on the Fire to do with as you please.

4. Democratized apps. One of the biggest knocks on the Apple AppStore is that it’s a closed system—if Apple doesn’t like your stuff, no app for you. One of the biggest knocks on the Google Android software powering nearly every other tablet out there is that it's too open—you’re required to sift through a lot of junk to get to the goods.

The Kindle Fire hopes to bridge that gap with the Amazon Appstore, which remains open like Android, but only makes available the very best and most popular apps from the open market. The result: More free apps without the hassle, the best of both worlds approach.

5. Easier to hold. The 10-inch iPad is a lot of fun, but hard to handle with one hand due to its weight and size. The 6-inch Kindle reader, on the other hand, is a lot easier to hold. With only one hand, you can hold it for several hours without fatigue. The new 7-inch Kindle Fire promises the same: capable of being held with one hand, lighter than the iPad, and a lot more portable.

All of those pros don’t come without sacrifices, however. The Fire’s screen is 3” smaller than the iPad, which might not make it as ideal a device for watching movies or playing HD games (that’s to be seen, though). Furthermore, the Fire lacks a lens and microphone, so it won’t be able to snap photos, shoot video, or accept video calls.

But for $300 less, those are things I bet a lot of people can live without.

Amazon's billionaire Chief Executive Jeff Bezos unveiled the Fire at a lower-than-expected price of $199.

Bezos said Amazon is making "millions" of the tablets, without being more specific. However, he urged customers to pre-order the device early.

"When Bezos quipped that people should get their pre-orders in quick, that wasn't just a sales pitch," said Brian Blair, an analyst at Wedge Partners. "That was him warning this will sell out."

When the first Kindle came out in 2007, Amazon hadn't made enough and the e-reader sold out in less than a week. You could win this when everyone else is hitting eBay, looking for the elusive units!

A few things stand out :

The Kindle Fire is a tablet with a 7-inch screen, giving it a similar look and feel as the RIM BlackBerry Playbook or Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 .

It runs a heavily modified version of Google's operating system, includes 8GB of internal memory, and begins shipping to U.S. customers on November 15.

With it, you can read e-books using Amazon's popular Kindle software,

download Android apps and games using Amazon's Appstore,

purchase music using Amazon's MP3 store, and

stream video using Amazon's video on-demand service.

The common thread here is that Amazon's suite of digital stores and services are all loaded and ready to go out of the box.

Of course, many basic features are covered, as well. You can browse the Web, e-mail your friends, read PDFs, and listen to locally stored music, without any trouble.

In terms of system performance, the Kindle Fire includes a dual-core processor, a Micro-USB 2.0 port, and an estimated 8 hours of battery life.

Unlike the iPad 2, the Kindle Fire supports Adobe Flash Web content!

Amazon's vast server farms are good for more than just storage.

A unique Web browser called Silk is included on the Kindle Fire;

it splits the work of loading Web pages between the device and Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) system.

The result will lead to faster page loads,

as well as some predictive loading of content and sites you access often.

No other tablet on the market has a feature like this--not even Apple.
