TORTURE PORN?

You ever wonder about the mental stability of those making films these days?

Take TUSK --

a film by the cult favorite, Kevin Smith, about a young man being slowly mutilated into becoming a human walrus.

It cost $3 million and so far has earned only one million back.

BUT THE FILM HAS GOTTEN HIM FINANCING FOR HIS CLERKS 3 film.

You ever wonder what masquerades as thinking in the heads of the studio bosses?

Then, there is the new TV show STALKER --

The first 2 minutes were hard for most to watch.  I did not even bother trying.

An innocent, bound woman is mocked, slowly tortured, and then gleefully murdered by a hooded man.

The action is so leisurely, gruesomely detailed it seems as if the show's creator and writer, Kevin Williamson, was entranced with the scene.

This Halloween the first SAW is coming back to the theaters for its 10th Anniversary "Celebration."

It made over $100 million worldwide for just a little over $1 million cost.  You guessed it.

It spawned a long line of sequels where helpless victims were forced to self-mutilate or mutilate others

in a frenzied attempt to escape a maze of tortures.

SAW II and SAW III made even more money.

Of course, you can pander to sadists for just so long before they go elsewhere for their jollies.

The next 2 SAW's dipped a bit.  SAW VI dropped like a brick at the box office.

But I fear the re-issue of the original SAW will make many millions for no production cost at all.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS SAY OF THE MIND-SET OF OUR CULTURE?

NO WONDER COMIC BOOK MOVIES ARE DOING SO WELL.

AT LEAST THERE IS A MORAL COMPASS TO THEM.

Now, for a bit of SAW humor (Not Scary):

  1. I like horror, but not into torture porn. Too sick and too close to reality.

  2. I'm more into psycho-thrillers. Blood and guts gets on my nerves.

I have to have a hero to root for in any horror movie or novel I read. Just the monster(s) are no fun for me, too.

I like suspenseful thrillers as well. Gore is just a lazy way to tell a tale to me. :-)

  4. Don't like to watch or read about torture, it makes me feel queasy that humans can do that to other humans. A clean death, okay, but yeah, sick minds are out there, never think they are not.

I like reading about the future where there just might be some intelligent minds. There will, however, always be sadists, masochists, etc as all genes are not created equal.

  5. Too often our popular books and movies are appealing to the lowest common denominator. Which I think is very low indeed.
Yes there is ugliness and cruelty. Do we have to dwell on it?

  6. No horror movies or books for me. I thought Kevin Smith had stopped making movies.

  7. Having met A LOT of filmmakers through my work, I can easily say that those who make the most disgusting movies are often the sweetest of all people. And filmmakers who want to include a moral message and a good heart are more often than not depressed, frustrated, and even downright dishonest people. I guess they're trying to compensate with their art.

  8. Horror is fun, torture or slasher porn is just sick. What's sad is that it can appeal to unbalanced people who wouldn't hesitate to act out their fantasies.
