THE WINNER IS! plus WHAT IS MAGIC?

All of you who posted about my contest and
VICTOR STANDISH MUST DIE!
were entered.

JEREMY HAWKINS
has won!

Send me your address, Jeremy!

NOW ...

DO YOU KNOW WHAT MAGIC IS IN FICTION?

Is Voodoo magic in fiction?

I was confronted with that question
when I submitted THE LEGEND OF VICTOR STANDISH
to these fine people,

and they emailed me back saying,
"Ah, where exactly is the magic?"

In Meilori's, I sat at Marie Laveau's table and asked,
"Ma'am, is Voodoo considered magic?"

And death was on the air like the smell of ashes as she said,
"Child, you be wanting to spend da rest of yer life as a
bedbug?"

Samuel carefully escorted me away, saying,
"Magic in fiction is the endowing of fictional characters or objects with magical powers."

The Necronomicon was invented as fiction by H. P. Lovecraft;
other authors such as August Derleth and Clark Ashton Smith also cited
it in their works, with Lovecraft's approval,
as he believed such common allusions built up "a background of evil verisimilitude."

There are many forms or styles of magic:

Magic as an innate talent

Magic acquired through studying

Magic bestowed by another

Magic via enchanted objects

{This image is in the public domain because its copyright has expired.}

But Beware!

Without puting limits to the magic in your tales,
you will make of your character a Mary Sue.

So?
What do you think?

Is magic in fiction confined to magic wands and spells?

What kinds of magic do you use in your novels
or
in the novels you prefer to read?

Oh, they accepted Victor as magical.

  1. Hi Roland .. congratulations to Jeremy for winning the Victor Standish must Die contest ..

Magic in fiction - there must always be an element ... in our own imaginations, in the thoughts created by the author ...

Interesting post - thanks Roland .. cheers Hilary

  4. Hilary:
I'm happy for Jeremy as well. :-) Yes, magic in the heart or in the action -- still magic must be present for all great fiction.

    Alex:
    I am excited for Jeremy!

    Jeremy:
Wouldn't that be The Walking Dead Happy SHUFFLE? LOL. Glad you won.
