Do You Cringe When Your Favorite TV Show Does A Musical Episode?
Grey's Anatomy anyone?
But The Flash (with guest star Supergirl) had a winner of a musical episode for many reasons.
1) The Finale Song "Running Home To You" was penned by La La Land Song writers.
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
2) "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" star and creator, Rachel Bloom wrote the upbeat "Super Friends" number.
3) Covers mixed with new material to blend in seamlessly with the musical.
4) It actually moved the plots of both shows forward and was NOT a filler episode.
AND MOST IMPORTANT
5) THE CAST COULD REALLY SING!
Flash (Grant Gustin) and Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Music Meister (Darren Criss) are all Glee alumni!
Jessie Martin (Joe West) starred in the musical, Rent, and Carlo Valdes (Cisco) was in the musical, Once.
John Barrowman and Victor Garber are both Broadway vets
And they knocked a Guys and Dolls cover out of the park.
When you have talent, songs, and writing like this, how could you go wrong!
I hate to say it, but I skipped that episode for the very reason they made it a musical. Just too silly. After watching Legion, I just can't handle that kind of silly in my superhero shows now.
ReplyDeleteOh, Alex, you missed a great episode. Unlike with LEGION, the singing made sense in the context of the plot.
DeleteAlice Wentworth just tapped me on the shoulder saying:
"Excuse me, Roland, but did this Alex say that a man wearing red spandex and running up the side of a building was not silly, but a man singing to the woman he loved was?"
I nodded, not wanting to further irritate a ghoul.
Alice harumphed, "Men!"
Watching her storm off, the ghost of Mark Twain chuckled, "Just wait til old Alex writes his next book, and I kidnap him again. That gal will want to be in on it!"
I sighed. Life at Meilori's was never boring.
Would've been awful if they couldn't sing. I've never been a fan of musicals though. People don't break out into song in real life. I think the only musicals I liked were Paint Your Wagon (only because it was Clint Eastwood) and the movie version of Hair.
ReplyDeleteLike you with you, it is a rare musical that interests or entertains me. But this musical was truly fun and their singing made sense in the context of the plot (wouldn't you sing if you would be killed if you didn't?) :-)
DeleteHuh! I learned a lot from this post. I didn't know that all of those actors and actresses had musical backgrounds, except for Victor Garber, who appeared in the movie Godspell, IIRC.
ReplyDeleteI learned it from doing research on this episode. Fun info, right? I liked Victor Garber in ALIAS.
DeleteI really do have to see this movie. I've just not had time for much movie going, and I do miss it.
ReplyDeleteThis is an episode of the TV show, The Flash from the 3rd season, episode 17. You can buy it from Amazon Instant Video for $1.99 -- but you'll have to provide your own popcorn. :-)
DeleteI haven't seen the movie. Not usually a fan of musicals, but there are exceptions. Mumma Mia must be my favourite of all time--watched it countless times. Mumma Mia!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a usual fan of musicals either. Musicals do best when they portray a backstage story of a musical being made. It makes more sense that way. :-)
DeleteI'm not surprised when it turns out that actors can sing, dance, ice skate, play the cello -- whatever. So many really are multi-talented. They must be thrilled to show off their chops.
ReplyDeleteYes, all of the actors were thrilled to be able to flex their talents that had not been tapped in months. A fun episode. :-)
