SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN

What is the secret of this earthly pilgrimage?
How can there be comfort in this world of desolation?

How can the name of a hill be music to a lonely soul?
How can the name of a river heal?
Aye, even the name of a river that runs no more.

Who knows what keeps us living and struggling, while all things break down about us?

On the deserted shore there is yet water that laps against the sands.

In the dark and silent forest, there is a leaf that falls.

Behind the polished panelling in lush boadrooms,
the white ant eats away the wood.

Nothing is ever quiet, except for fools.

Once there was a man
who sang for the love of music, striving to touch the wounded soul.

He found no fame, few venues for his songs.
He did work that no one else would.

His two little-bought albums found their way to South Africa.

His words blazed in the hearts of the white liberals and oppressed blacks who heard them.
His albums out-sold Elvis, the Rolling Stones, and Abbey Road.

His name became legend.
His fate remained a mystery.

Until now.

If you desire a feel-good, true detective story,
then SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN
is for you.

Thank you for pointing out this important, heart-wrenching, yet uplifiting documentary!

  3. I did go over to Hilary's blog to read about this man. Sounds like a great movie, too.

It made me think of Jimmy Cliff in Jamaica and what was an underground film: 'The Harder They Come'. It was about the harsh life in Jamaica at that time, and how music gives these young musicians a chance to find a new life.

Thanks for alerting us to the story, Roland! (funny comment you made about Kafka's story, sorry about the reminder)

  5. D.G.:
I couldn't resist the Kafka reply. :-) It is sadly uplifting how music and the urge to create light in the darkness can sustain us.

    Alex:
I know Hilary did a post, and I spotlighted it. The movie is out on DVD I believe. BB's are eating my surplus money however!

  7. Shelly:
I'm going to look for the DVD of it, too.

Is that "interesting" in the Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times? LOL.

I am waging what seems to be a losing battle against bed bugs since the owner of the apartment complex won't spray the adjoining apartments that keep sending those BB's my way!!

And I am trying to get some writing done on my THREE SPIRIT KNIGHT as well. Whew!
