ON THIS DAY IN 1836, THE ALAMO PLEADED FOR HELP

On February 24, 1836, in San Antonio, Texas, Colonel William Travis

issues a call for help on behalf of the Texan troops defending the Alamo,

an old Spanish mission and fortress under siege by the Mexican army.

(A traditional bride and groom in the Ukraine, though I feel now more funerals will be held than weddings in that country.)

On this day in this year, Russia has invaded Ukraine,

and I foresee many ineffectual international fingers shaking at Russia

and not much else.

(Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland)

On September 1, 1939, the German army under Adolf Hitler launched an invasion of Poland

that triggered the start of World War II.

What do you foresee happening after today?

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, EVERYONE!

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their valentine.

The single women’s names would be added to an urn and single men of the town would take a name out

and pin it to their sleeves for one whole week.

This would allow everyone in the town to see who their valentine was and

could be where the term “wearing your heart on your sleeve” originates.

Oh, Hobbes gets the ides:

Calvin not so much!

May the healing power of love

We Are An ENDANGERED SPECIES and How To Go Down Fighting!

If you are reading this,
then obviously
you are a reader.

The ranks of book readers
are shrinking.

A recent study revealed
that
33% of high school graduates
plan never
to read another book ...
ever.

That same study revealed
42% of college graduates
plan never to read
another book either.

I know what you're thinking.

But You and I
are of another generation.

We reflect the thinking of
the Past not the Future.

In this Digital,
Multi-Task Era,

our world is designed
 for shallow skimming
rather than deep diving.

Think SHORT STORY

Perfect length for this
distractible time.

Don't groan.

Think H. P. LOVECRAFT

His stories existed
in a linked universe

with entities and tomes
crossing over from one
story to another.

Readers did not have
to start from scratch
with each story.

The surroundings
were familiar
although terrifying.

Or have a character common
to all your stories.

Short stories bring more pressure,
because like with poetry,

each paragraph, sentence, and word
is more important
than they would be
inside a large novel.

 Short stories are precise
with their delivery,

they must capture
the attention of the reader
extraordinarily quickly,

and

tell a full tale
from beginning to end
in roughly
a half hour of reading.

Which is the perfect length
in today's world
with too much to do.

If you got anything useful
from this post,
consider
sharing it, will you?

Can You Have Heart-Warming Horror?

(A Farewell to Arms)

Apparently so

I submit for your consideration:

To what lengths would you go
to resurrect your lost first love?

It is the 1st Mardi Gras after WWII
and some wounds are not just
still bleeding
they have become gangrene.

Take a listen or a read.

I do not expect to win a Nobel Prize

or be likened to Hemingway

but I write some of the best prose
to ever be not read.
:-)

Have You Ever Written Yourself Into A Corner?

I did with my latest novel

I drove 500 miles on blood runs
 over the weekend,
so no inspiration then.

Monday and Tuesday,
my days off,
found me too exhausted to cognigate!

I try to put Lucas into as tight a trap as possible.
Worse, he had to escape using stage magic!

Then ...

I recalled from a prior book,
Lucas had stolen one of Leonardo's notebooks
on one of his O.S.S. missions.

just as I spotted a cover of one of my research
books on stage magic.

And PRESTO!

The solution came to me

But I start work tomorrow
so
poor Lucas will have to brave death for a week!

Have you come up blank when writing?

How did you write your way out of it?

Now, He Is Become Legend_Jeremy Hawkins_IWSG post

I just recently heard that Jeremy had died.
Not passed on.

I refuse to hide from the fact that we will all die.

Life is but a promissory note
and soon or late, we all will hear the knock on our door
that the foreclosure is due.

We will have lost priceless treasures existing in our Now by the searching for Tomorrow's  fool's gold.

Jeremy Hawkins wrote in comment to one of my  posts:

"I have been trying to obtain a dream or reality for some time now and for me...

I have hit the bottom.

Many life situations have sucked my creative side dry and my steps, sites and attention proves it.

Do we get it back, can I... I only hope too.

Sadly, it's a long road... dreams are for those who like me, trying and failing.

Though I keep trying, but there is nothing I am trying for at the moment...

and that thing called reality, that just sucks.

I think I went off topic... dammit, sorry."

Like the Velveteen Rabbit, Jeremy became real by being polished by the rough circumstances of Life.

He was beautiful to all those who knew him. And for the others who did not understand.

It was their loss.

He had a fascinating interview with The Left Hand of Horror:

In these past days, whenever I heard of Jeremy, he was always helping ...

with Art design, T-Shirts, a supportive word, or even a post on his magazine, SIX STRINGS

as he did with me:

“The loss of a friend is like that of a limb; time may heal the anguish of the wound, but the loss cannot be repaired.”

—Robert Southey, Poet

I think a good choice of a musical selection for Jeremy's unique life is:
