HOW TO DRAW THE MOST VIEWERS TO YOUR BLOG

Inger Wiltz (Desert Canyon Living)
http://desertcanyonliving.blogspot.com/2016/06/my-ten-most-popular-posts-why-did.html

started thinking of what were her 10 most visited posts from something I said on my own blog.

Inger thought perhaps folks were drawn to others' misfortunes.

She found that her 10 most popular posts did, indeed, contain some misfortune.

But others contained themes of friendship and colorful locations.

I checked on some of my most visited posts.

The most was to HIDDEN SECRETS OF THE AMAZON KINDLE FIRE from 2011. (10,745)

But the second most visited was from May 11, 2016
WHEN LIFE KNOCKS YOU DOWN (2,115)

The Third most visited was WHY FRIENDSHIP? from Sept. 4, 2011 (1,966)

The fourth was from May 11, 2016 DON'T MISS THIS POST (1,788)

So we have Curiosity, Surviving Hardship, and Friendship as the themes for my most popular posts.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOST POPULAR POSTS HAVE BEEN?

WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS THE REASON?

  1. Sigh. I have no idea, especially since I've suspended my blog, and I've been so busy I haven't even been visiting blogs for several days (sorry, Roland). But I do know that humor can definitely attract readers. And I do love humor to help get me through tough times.

    1. Humor does attract me to books and blogs as well. :-)

      I have missed you.

  2. I think people enjoy reading posts they are able to relate to. Hence, friendship, surviving hardship and also scenic pictures of where we would like to escape to. Personally, I like posts that make me think, laugh and inspire.

    1. I believe the same is true of fiction as well. :-)

  3. The most viewed posts from my blog are:
The Five People You Meet in Heaven: A novel not to be Missed (3081 views), where I discuss the novel's themes.

Quotes: General H. Norman Schwarzkopf (966 views) where I discuss how a quote from the General relates to the protagonist's views in Flank Hawk

Interview with Fantasy & Horror Writer C. Dean Andersson (697 views). The content is pretty obvious.

I think sometimes it's the pictures that people are searching and follow the link, often the title, and also if the blog post is linked to from other places.

Except via the occasional comment, or email I get based on a post, it's hard to tell if the link was just visited, or if the content was actually read.

In the end, I just post what I find interesting and hope the folks that follow and visit my blog do too. I don't try to focus on what will necessarily bring in more eyes. My most creative writing efforts are focused on my fiction. I blog because it's sort of fun and a way to share news, views, and information with readers out there.

On average I get about 150 views per post, with most hovering around 70 to 110 or so, (with some remaining in the teens to low 20s) and I average only a few comments (about 3) per post.

I do find that if I post around on relevant reader and writer forums, the 'readership' does get boosted for that post. But there, I make sure it's relevant and not in anyway 'spam.'

So, Roland, you're much more effective in attracting and interesting readers than me :) Good job and keep it up!

    1. No, I am not more effective. If you and I touch just one mind, one heart and brighten the day or lighten the load for that one soul then we have done a beautiful thing. :-)

  4. My most popular posts involved RiffTrax and Shannara - several had over 20,000 views. Must've been the popularity of those shows.
The most popular at the IWSG is one on where to list discounted eBooks. What really surprises me is I'm the one who wrote it.

  5. I decided to look it up. Of my ten most popular posts of all time, six of them are where I posted a pattern. Three of them are where I list what I've knitted (with links to patterns). And one is an A to Z reflections post.

I sense a theme... No, seriously, I did know my knitting patterns are the most popular, mostly because people come back to them to make those projects. And I have them linked on knitting websites.

I never expected my little subbing stories to make it big or go viral or anything. I'm quite happy with the way things are at the moment.

    2. Wow! That would be awesome. I think you should keep hoping!!

  6. I wrote a post about the woman who sued McDonald's for spilling their hot coffee on herself. It was not the frivolous lawsuit many assume it was. It became popular when someone on Reddit linked to it.

  8. Inger is very dear. I think because she feels up close and person. Just off the top of my head - I think people respond to personal stories, both happy ones and sad ones. And incredibly imaginative ones such as yours, my dear friend.

    1. Ann, I believe you are right: Inger comes across as authentic -- and in this plastic society that is rare!

And thanks so much for such nice words about my writing ... and for visiting and staying to talk awhile. How are you and Jen doing? :-)

  9. Hi Roland - as I haven't written any books ... I'm happy being under the radar - the odd comment pops up - but I think I've taken them down as they weren't relevant.

I much prefer seeing people I know come and comment, or new friends who have come over from someone else's blog - I rather wish they said where they'd come from ... i.e. within this group of bloggers ... it makes it easier to find out a little more and thus relate.

It is authenticity, being friendly and writing interesting posts ... IWSG and the A-Z are great places to post on ...

    Cheers Hilary
