HORROR

What draws an audience to stories of horror?

I think often it is the "What would I do in such a strange situation?" frame of mind.

I found this trailer on IMDB and watched because it was set in Louisiana:

All right -- D. G. this is for you:
Beneath the streets of Paris are the catacombs:

Take this evocative trailer.  I chanced upon it looking for videos on vintage Hollywood.

Ignore the hokey face.  The beginning will hook you.

The end will leave you feeling as I felt when I read MOCKINGJAY:

"I could write something better with that premise than that!"

And Robyn, you keep writing humorous reasons to be celibate on your blog, here is the movie for you!

  1. Gee, thanks, Roland, A horror film I might like. I would have gone to see the Catacombs, but hubs wanted nothing to do with it. So, we went to see the Crypt Archeologique, which were the Roman ruins, beneath Notre Dame. Thanks for the thought. . .

I'm sure I would have felt the vibes of all those souls in such a place as the Catacombs. How many died violent deaths?

Have you ever read Psychlone by Greg Bear? It's different from his other books.

  2. NOT a horror fan… at all…

But how are you, Roland??? I've been thinking about you hoping you're okay. I'm sorry I haven't checked in sooner!

  3. D.G.:
In the anime NOIR, set in France, they had an episode set in the catacombs. Too many of those poor souls died violent deaths sadly.

I'll have to check on that Greg Bear book you mention. :-)

    Morgan:
I'm still saving the world: one ill patient at a time. :-)

I am not a horror fan myself. I need a hero to root for, and horror films seldom give me that.

DUMA KEY by Stephen King was the last horror novel I enjoyed. And that was because of the friendship between Wireman and the elderly woman he cared for -- and the friendship of Wireman and the maimed Freemantle artist.

I'm glad you think of me at all. The scars on my face have healed as much as they are going to and do not horrendous. How are things with you?

  4. I like horror stories only if they're not gory or violent. You mention the Duma Key, and I had a good time with that and some other Stephen King books. Movies like The Conjuring scared the crap out of me, especially because most of the time the audience sees nothing but only knows that something invisible is there in the corner, or in the wardrobe, or lurking in the basement.

I'm so glad your scars are healing.

Atmospheric horror is the best for my tastes, too. :-)

I bought the audiobook of DUMA KEY just because I liked the friendships that held their center despite the horror and dangers.

Yes, my scars are healing. You can tell they are there, but they add character ... or make me one!

Listening to Willie Nelson singing OVER THE RAINBOW. I do have ecletic taste! :-)

  6. I don't watch horror. I like adventure and suspense, but not horror. In fact, I have read some books that I wish I could do over and not read. They stuck with me for far too long and really scared the bejesus out of me. It is easier for me to avoid the horror movie.

Like you, there are novels and movies I wish I had not punished myself with!

Adventure and suspense are best. I want a hero or heroine to root for -- not gallons of gore.

When very little, the original THE FOG got to me: the mother racing across a fog filled with terrors to reach her tiny son.

THE MIST ended so grim and nihilistic -- it was Stephen King's version of THE ROAD. bRRR.
