N teaches us that Literate doesn't always translate to Long-Lived

Night Stalker ran for only six weeks. It was based on KOLCHAK, THE NIGHT STALKER.

It was literate, the scripts actually making Kolchak sound like a thoughtful newspaper reporter.

Sadly, literate does not always translate into high ratings.

Here is the trailer for the original series that helped spark THE X-FILES:

Do yourself a favor: if you see the 10 episode DVD collection of NIGHT STALKER in the bargain bin, get it.

And what N TV day would be complete without

  1. I LOVED Northern Exposure! That was such a good show that you just knew it wouldn't last for long. Great writing, casting, the works.

  3. Also ignorant - though I had heard at least of Northern Exposure.
And, given some of our recent success stories (50 Shades, Twilight and anything Dan Brown leap to mind) I think that literary is a positive disadvantage. Sigh.

  5. I missed that Night Stalker, I would have watched it... the Kolchak show bothered me as a kid, in a great way.

  6. Night Stalker... it seemed like a show right up my alley. Why did I miss it? Then I saw the year it aired... 2005. And that explained everything. The darkness within consumed my life in 2005. Migraines. Migraines. Migraines. In that year I spent most of my time in bed. I didn't eat much. And I didn't watch anything other than music videos on the TV. I didn't want to commit for longer than 15 minutes to an upright position on the couch.

Anyway, thanks for bringing this one to my attention. 10 episodes. A darn shame.

Why is it that is a truism that the better a show is the more likely it is to be cancelled? :-(

    Hilary:
So many of us live constantly with darkness in some form or other. I pray that life grows lighter for you.

    Elephant's Child"
Yes, it does seem the more incompetent a book or show is, the more popular it is. Why is that?

    Teresa:
    Wasn't NE fun?

    Jeremy:
You can sometimes pick it up in the Wal_Mart dvd bargain bin. Or Amazon Instant Video has it too.

    Robin:
I am so sorry about your migraines. 2005 was a bad year for so many: Hurricanes Katrina and Rita forcibly emptied my city and sent the whole population to the four winds, searching for some haven to seek refuge for months. :-(

Yet, it also gave birth to my FRENCH QUARTER NOCTURNE and THE LEGEND OF VICTOR STANDISH.

  8. I remember Night Stalker. Now I know why I didn't see it very many times. Loved Northern Exposure.

  9. I did like Northern Exposure! Using a trebuchet or catapult is something we don't see a lot. . .Nice (another N word) Never saw Night stalker, and never knew there were so many cancelled tv shows, the networks are fickle. . .

  12. Jaei:
Northern Exposure was too entertaining to last. Sigh.

    D.G.:
The Networks certainly are fickle. Sad but true. It is awe-inspiring to see a catapault in action in person!

    Stephen:
The ghost of Darrin McGavin is going to haunt you for that! :-)

    Alex:
That was a fun quip by Stephen. :-)
