HELP ME! IWSG post

At Meilori's, I was muttering under my breath, writing my latest post for IWSG

when the ghost of Mark Twain sat down next to me.

He reached out, snatching my laptop. "'Scuze me, boy, I want to check my Twitter feed."

I gaped at him.  "You have a Twitter Feed?"

"Sure, son. @TheTwain.  Just getting started, don't you know.

But tarnation, some of those writer friends of yours just don't know when to shut up!"

"Yes, it does seem all about BUY ME!  But why are you are on Twitter?"

"Why to help you, son!  When I chat with someone on Twitter, and I make them laugh and add value to their life,

they start to think that the book of the fellow I haunt just might add value to them, too."

He winked at me.  "Want to see my header on Twitter?"

"Could you help C. Lee McKenzie and not me today?"

He laughed, "Why, ain't you the wily one?"

"What do you mean?"

"There are benefits to helping fellow writers, don't you know?"

"Like what?"

"FREE MARKETING, son. Any traffic initiated from her end will arrive to your site."

"I'm not doing it for that!"

"Of course not, and those visitors will see that, and you get the added plus of good feelings from them and her."

Mark lit his ghost cigar.

"MORE CONTENT for your blog is always a good thing, too.

Different content shakes up things so they don't get boring."

"A CHANGE OF PACE for my friends, you mean?"

Mark nodded,

"Publishing a interview with a fellow author introduces some variety, not only for you in producing it, but for your audience in consuming it"

He smiled broadly, "You get to network -- darn word sounds like a new stitch in knitting, don't you know? --

Where was I?  Oh, yes.  You get to network in a way that doesn't FEEL like networking ... to you or to your visitors."

He puffed a cloud of smoke that slowly formed into a riverboat.  He winked at me.

"Learned that from some wizard in the most godawful grey hat you ever saw.

But last, and most important of all, son ...

It feels good to help someone out by drawing attention to her work.

And it feels good to realize you can help yourself by putting the spotlight on someone else.

If more of your friends realized that,

why, the whole lot of your friends would be helping out each other more."

He started typing on my laptop.  "What is this here SIGN OF THE DRAGON about, anyway?"

I said, "Think of STAND BY ME mixed in with that STRANGER THINGS you like so, sir."

He stroked his moustache.  "You don't say?  Why, I will have to check it out."

"You can read my Kindle copy, sir.  It comes out today."

He shoved my laptop back to me.  "Well, just don't sit there!  Get to buying it, too."

He looked out to the shadows as if being able to see each and every one of you reading this.  "That goes for you, too, pilgrims!"

  1. You are so original...and creative, Roland. I love your posts. And what Twain says here is so true, on any level. We help others, we help ourselves. I'm off to see Lee ...

    1. That means a loet coming from you, Ann. Say HI to Lee for me and Mark. He really does have a twitter account. He was always into the latest inventions. :-)

  2. Ann has already said what I would have said if I'd gotten here in a more timely manner.

It's always a treat to read your posts, which are anything but all about YOU! Yet they reveal your talent for creative thinking and writing.

Mark Twain's right, you are one wily guy who I thoroughly enjoy sharing stories and time with.

    1. At the end of my THE NOT-SO-INNOCENTS AT LARGE will be a Mark Twain tale that will direct folks to your book after fully detailing his first tragic love.

Perhaps it will pick up the sales of your book just when they are beginning to taper off. :-) I hope so.

    2. We can only hope! And I'm awaiting more of Twain, especially his tragic love tale.

Cool, I thought that was you who followed me on Twitter!

    1. Mark's ghost is hurt -- that was him who followed you on Twitter. He just used my laptop to do it! (Pssst - I think the ghost of Mark Twain just joined Twitter, thinking it would afford him a chance to flirt with pretty girls who he imagines fill the ranks of the internet!)

    1. I know. I believe I visited and commented, too. But life as a rare blood courier has me running. Also I am busy visiting the Ancient Egyptian Exhibit in the Louvre in my WIP, next stop: Dragons over Paris!

  5. Mr. Twain is a wise man.

I just wish guest interviews and posts did better on my blog. Whenever I publish one, it's a struggle to get traction and my numbers drop. Half the time, the guest blogger forgets to promote it, but I don't blame them--we all get busy.

Since the guest posts and interviews don't seem to perform well--even when they include something valuable for my readers, I've offered to help my fellow writers in other ways. Which reminds me--I have to get on that!

    1. Ah, but you've never done one with me. A guest has to shape his post to fit the blog he visits. Yours is on horror so that is what I would talk about.

Have you heard of the Creole Rougalou? I would tell of the history and grisly episodes of Rougalou sightings ... and only mention at the end that a clan of them appear in my latest WIP.

And I would make your readers laugh, too. Just saying. :-)

  6. I agree, but more and more people seem to be going for automated posting or purely promotional posting and that's just sad. :-/

    1. Automated means impersonal, and no one is pleased to be treated impersonally. :-(

  7. A kind thing to do, to help others. "Do the Kindest Things in the Kindest Ways". Good to be here again. Frankly, if writers don't help writers, who will?

  15. Mark is wise. Helping others is always a great idea. And while I’m less and less sure that social media sells anything, it’s pretty much the only avenue we of limited means have. I say that as someone who posts daily tweets on book promotion for a well-known writerly blog. Not as me, who doesn’t even bother to look at her blog statistics. :)

  17. Hi Roland - you've created Twain's lair for us and Meliori's too ... and helping others really does give us a positive edge ... that's why I like to comment, not so good at the guest posting bit - but then my world is somewhat different ... I'll need to re-evaluate anon ...

I must get to Twitter too .. cheers Hilary
