DO YOU HAVE IT IN YOU TO BE REAL?

I couldn't let today pass without mentioning ...

Margery Williams Bianco was born on this day in 1881.

Listen to the wisdom of the Skin Horse to her Velveteen Rabbit:

"It's a thing that happens to you.

When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.... You become.

It takes a long time.

That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept.

Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby.

But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

  1. How sweet those words about being real. It seems my hair is falling out and my eyes aren't what they used to be...perhaps I'm becoming real.

When we allow ourselves to be loved and to love in return, I think all of us become real. But I feel a bit like you, too! :-)

  3. Still wonderful words.
The Retro-Master will be visiting my site as well. The least we can do for a very awesome friend. He's just so talented.

I am still child enough inside to tear up a bit whenever I read those words. Mine was a lonely childhood, and fantasy friends were my links to sanity and family.

Jeremy did such a great header for you -- and for himself. He is one of the most talented bloggers I know. He's lucky to have a friend like you, Roland

  5. What a nice quote. It didn't make me tear up, I swear. It's something in my eye.

You sound like my best friend, Sandra. I admit tearing up a bit when I re-read that passage for the ump-teenth time. I am a child inside sometimes! :-)

Your "something in your eye" proves you're real after all.

  7. "The Velveteen Rabbit" has to be one of the best children's stories ever. I think with age we all become more "real" because it becomes too darned much trouble to pretend to be anything other than what we are, and the blessing is... we're still loved, even though we're a bit worn and no longer bother to hold in our tummies.

THE VELVETEEN RABBIT gives us all hope - whether young or old. Yes, LOL. When real, we no longer hold in our tummies, but hopefully we hold back some of our words! :-)

Your post on that Chinese Wal-Mart had some eerie and yuck-inducing picutres!! Culture shock for sure!

  9. LOL I guess I became "real" to my kids this weekend when everything came together for the wedding. It only takes money, right?

I've long been of the opinion that you have to have kids to truly understand what your parents went through at every stage of your own development. This weekend has taught me that no matter how prepared you think you are, life has a way of surprising you.

    You live, you grow.

    ......dhole

And love. All the money in the world will mean little to your kids if they do not feel loved by you.

And I know they do feel loved by you. :-)

I do not envy you all the stress, fuss, expense, and chaos of planning and executing a wedding. (And I chose the word "execute" on purpose!) By the end of the wedding, I think you wanted to execute somebody -- maybe yourself!

Life is a constant surprise to most of us I fear. I am praying the next few surpriese it has for me are happy ones! And for you, too. :-)

and that's all we need in this world anyway -- just love.
