THE WORLD IS CHANGING! BE BOLD or BE EXTINCT!

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED

THE WORLD IS CHANGING

It began with the internet ... and the growing impatience of Man.

We want what we want, when we want it, where we want it, and for the price we want it.

Newspapers are dying.  Record stores have faded from the malls.  Mortar bookstores are in peril.  Physical stores are under assault from Amazon.

"Cable Cutters" are growing.

The Cable Industry is facing grim enemies.

Google Fiber is digging furiously underground in Kansas City to launch a melding of computer with TV.

Steve Jobs, before he died, said this to his biographer:

“I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use,” he told me.

“It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud. No longer would users have to fiddle with complex remotes for DVD players and cable channels. It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine."

He smiled,  "I finally cracked it.”

The next announcement from Apple is coming soon.  Now, might be a good time to invest in Apple.

THE WORLD IS CHANGING ... but human nature remains the same,

What does this have to do with our writing?

HAVEN'T YOU ASKED - WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BREAK OUT?

Is it connections?  Timing?  A sizzling story?  Dumb luck?

All of those help.  But what really is needed is ...

IMAGINATION

Not visualization -- picture your name on the best seller lists, and it will appear there eventually.

No, we all know that is bull-____.

We must mind our surroundings.

Have you ever seen a new invention that was on fire in the stores and said, "Of course!  I should have thought of that!"

THE ANSWER FOR HOW YOU PERSONALLY CAN BREAK OUT WITH YOUR NOVEL IS
RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU --
RIGHT NOW.

That answer is not the same for you as it is for me.  We all come with our own distinct possiblilites.

Look at the changing world of technology.  Not Twitter.  Not Facebook.  Not Piniterest.  Not serials.

Those are all old-hat avenues, well-worn by the mob of followers.

You're going to have to be a trail-blazer.

What do readers want?

A good story at an affordable price in the format that is easiest to read or listen to.

When do readers read?  Is how readers read changing?  How so?  How can you make those answers work for you?

What facet of the world of technology and the internet is being under-used or over-looked?

It's right there in front of your eyes.  Look for it.  And when it appears dimly in the fog of possiblilites, don't hesitate.

Jump on it.

  1. This made me think of the interview I found on the extras list of the movie Cellular. It's actually disturbing. To me, anyway. And the ear buds the people wear in one of the CyberMen episodes of Dr. Who. That's what's next. Don't you think?

Imagination. That's the key, you're right. And forward thinking. Interesting post!

  2. Thanks, Words Crafter:
We have to busy our minds to think what will come up next and be ready for it!

  3. All comes down to finding new ways and the best ways to reach our readers. My third book is forcing me to think of new angles since it has an aspect that is different from the other two - and apparently is also the strongest part of the story.

  4. Yes - how to stand out amongst the many?

Are you sure someone hasn't written a book telling us how to fix this? There are so MANY writing books with varying levels of expertise. How does anyone judge which is best? The greater the choices, the less we want to wade through them.

Is connectivity the dream solution some want us to believe?
This inquiring mind wants to know. . .

  5. Just swinging by to say 'hello'! Haven't forgotten about you, Roland.

    Have a good weekend :)

Thanks. Sometimes it helps to have a friend drop by and say HI like this! I am so weary this evening! DayStar's whispers are beginning to get to me. Have a great weekend, Roland

  7. When texting first became popular my first thought was "why is technology going backwards?"

Now I understand the appeal. Its much better to carry on a private conversation via text as opposed to "talking" publicly so everyone can hear. And, with my hearing not as sharp as it used to be, at least I get what exactly is being said :) But the other convenience is not waiting for the person on the other end to answer, the awkward "hello, how's it going" chit chat and other polite formalities when all you want is a simple answer, or just say what's on your mind and be done.

Electronics is the way of the future, and sometimes its frightening, but it is always interesting. Once you figure it out, that is. I hate this new world where nothing comes with a training manual. Guess that's why you pay the smart people toload it all up for your one "simple touch" access.

  8. Donna:
I watched a husband and wife texting each other -- in the same room -- some months later they divorced.

For me the keyboard on phones are too small and the life is out of the conversation (tone of voice, timing, inflection -- all add depth and meaning to the dialogue.)

    But that's just me: I'm a dinosaur.

Technology strikes me as the Borg: you get gobbled up a piece at a time until you no longer recognize the world around you.

It is the Lakota in me to yearn for the far blue mountains, a small, warm circle of family and friends to touch the earth and one another. I am a creature of the past. Have a great Sunday, Roland
